The reasons why people want or need a website designer are the most obvious. Some want to try their hand at a web based business and others want a web presence to expand upon their retail or service based businesses. Many clients cited a website is far more cost effective advertising compared to traditional forms such as yellow pages, newspapers or direct marketing. A website reaches the world market where before a very expensive ad in a magazine would only reach its subscribers.

Would you hire a sales person who is un-imaginative and is unable to differentiate your products and services from competition? The answer I am sure is No? So why would you have a website that is similar to thousands of others?
You will have a long-term relationship with your website developer? Thus, it is very important that your website designer believes in forming long-term relationships with the client. As your needs grow and your website becomes popular, you will want to add new features to your website and it could be very costly if you cannot get the original website developer who built your site to update it for you. Thats why it is important to ensure that you can work with your web designer for the long-term.
In other words, being good at web design means being good at a lot. You have to understand browsers and markup languages. You have to grasp the basics of several cross-disciplinary fields, like content strategy and graphic design. All this, while staying firmly grounded in the reality of how everyday users browse the Web.
The Internet is based on links. If there weren't links, the Internet wouldn't exist. For this reason, if you find a good web site with good content you should link to that site. Don't care about the search engine ranking or the PageRank of the site you're linking to. If you find a web site that you or your visitors find valuable, then link to it and ask for a reciprocal link to your site. Search engines just try to organize the Internet. Links build it. Strategy: The first thing I do when I meet a new client is to show them examples of my previous flash design work.
This not only shows our website designer skills but also tells the customer that we are proud of our work and they are dealing with a web development firm that has experience and skills to fulfill their web design needs. This is probably the most important. If the website designer you are dealing with doesn't have any work to show you, or they cannot produce a few websites they have done entirely themselves, you should be careful in dealing with them. What do their website development portfolios tell you? Are the web designs clean and professional? Are the flash websites easy to navigate?

As website designers surrounded by trends and other design/graphic elements, we often forget the main reason people visit websites. Simply to read and find information (quickly and easily). Take away all the extra design elements and all we are left with is the type. Unlike glassy reflections, wood grain textures and shiny buttons, communication with type is timeless. So why not pay more attention to the backbone of a good web site design? The strength of a design lies within the type!
